Mechanics please help! Car not turning over but making aweful noise after being stuck in water!?

Ok, I was driving my son to school and got caught in a flash flood..my car died and I was stranded for atleast 15-25 min with water up to my doors. I eventually was pushed out and home by a good samaritan. Unfortunately, I did try to start my car right after it died (while in the water)..it made a not so good sound and I stopped. Anyway, once home I cleaned up the inside and let the car sit to dry out for 5 hours. I was concerned water was brought in the engine when I tried to start it but I checked the oil and its thick and black and no water on the dip stick. I didn't know then not to try to start it so I did. The car will not start..it technically doesn't turn over. It does however make a horrible noise..sounding like something may be going on with the starter..it actually sounds like the fly wheel or something is grinding. This is my only car and I'm in a panic. Please help..what could it be and what do I need to do? By the way, its a 1996 Toyota Avalon. Thanks in advance for your help!
